The privacy of visitors, both buyers and non-buyers, is critically important to site admins. As such, visitors maintain full control over their personal information and admins will never spam visitors or share personal information with any third party or disclose visitors’ personal information without their permission.
Site admins are committed to providing a safe and secure shopping experience for visitors. To ensure this, admins have integrated an encrypted Secure Socket Layer ("SSL") into the site through which all sensitive transactions, such as payments, pass.
A Few Details
Site admins collect personal information for billing and fulfillment purposes only. These details (e.g., credit card numbers, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, &tc.) are encrypted and stored on the site’s server at the user’s discretion. Site admins share this information externally only when a third party, such as a financial institution, needs the information to process payment.
The site’s SSL uses 256-bit encryption: the highest level of protection available for Internet communications, including credit card and other financial transactions. All sensitive transactions are passed through this secure connection, and site admins have a policy of never sending or requesting private information, such as credit card numbers, via e-mail, telephone, SMS, &c. If you receive such a request, referred to as “phishing,” please report it here.
Encryption is a process by which intelligible information is rendered useless to all entities, computer or human, unless these entities have the proper encryption key. This key allows the appropriate, intended entities to decode secure information passed to them.
The process of encryption involves pieces of information called “bits.” At it’s most basic, a bit is one piece of information, represented by a number. A unit of information with 40 bits, for example, would have 40 characters. But 40 bit encryption isn’t terribly difficult to crack using modern computers that crunch large number combinations quickly in order to determine every possible key. Such an effort is known as a "brute force attack," and it’s why increasingly complex encryption ciphers have been developed.
128 bit encryption adds 88 more bits to the key and, therefore, makes it much harder for would-be hackers to crack since the range of permutations runs well beyond the trillions: 2×10128 (see the number). 256 bit encryption, of course, is even stronger. It generates keys 2×10256 bits long (see the number).
Most activity on the site involves browsing public content (web pages, modules sale, &tc.) so there’s no need to pass this information through our SSL. However, the site’s ecommerce system routinely passes credit card information and other sensitive personal information to our server. As such, these transactions take place in a secure environment.
All modern browsers have a symbol that indicates when a secure session has been initiated. Depending on browser, this typically involves either a broken or complete key or an open or closed lock. The complete key and closed lock symbols indicate active secure sessions.
Some browsers warn users when they enter a secure area from a regular area (and vice versa). The intent of such messages is understandable, but they may, nevertheless, startle users and make them feel as if they’ve done something wrong. If users see this sort of security “warning” while using the site, it simply means they’ve initiated a secure session and thereby entered the safest, most secure area of the site.
Finally, site admins will share information about new features and listings only with those who sign up for the email newsletter and/or otherwise indicate their interest in on-going communications during purchase. Site admins will only otherwise contact visitors who make a purchase when a transaction necessitates it. In either case, all account holder emails, faxes, and phone calls are treated as strictly confidential.
Site admins collect traffic and subscription information in the aggregate using services such as Google Analytics, FeedBurner, and Campaign Monitor. Admins use this bulk traffic information for marketing and research purposes and never track the visiting and browsing habits of individual visitors (e.g., via Internet Protocol [IP] addresses). From time to time, site admins may publicly or privately release non-personally-identifying information in the aggregate (e.g., by publishing a report on site usage and traffic trends) for marketing or other business purposes.
